On September 9, professional and amateur cyclists will race through the heart of Detroit’s entertainment district for the inaugural Detroit Cycling Championship, which is being presented by the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC).
The USA Cycling-sanctioned race will attract cycling enthusiasts as well as families to share in the thrill of watching nationally recognized racers competing for $45K in cash prizes, among the top purses in the U.S. The Detroit Cycling Championship will include Category I-V men’s and women’s races, kid’s race, military veteran race, and healthy living exposition.
“We are pleased to be taking the DAC’s history of sports leadership and traditions to a new level with this event,” said Pat O’Keefe, President of the Detroit Athletic Club Board of Directors. “The Detroit Cycling Championship will bring world-class cycling to our local community and offer fun for everyone. It will be an action-packed sports weekend in Detroit.”
The Detroit Cycling Championship will host a Military Veteran race, sponsored by Cooper Standard. The free race offers experienced cyclists the opportunity to race for medals and merchandise.
In partnership with Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), the Detroit Cycling Championship and the Detroit Athletic Club Foundation will gather 130 new and gently used bikes and present them to children in Detroit who exemplify superior sportsmanship.
“We are proud to partner with Detroit PAL to provide 130 bikes to children in the city of Detroit,” said O’Keefe. “The kids are the real winners. We are going to give them the VIP experience on race day and present them with the bikes. They are also welcome to join in on the kids race in the afternoon on September 9.”
The bike drive will begin on August 18, and continue until September 5. Individuals or companies interested in donating bikes and contributing to the DAC Kids IN Detroit (KIND), should visit DetroitCycling.com to learn more.
The Detroit Cycling Championship will host the Healthy Living Expo in Grand Circus Park and feature bike safety sessions, health coaches, product sampling and more. The community is welcome to attend The Food Truck Alley and Beer Garden, sponsored by Atwater Beer. Food Truck Alley will feature National Coney Island, Hot Taco, Tim Hortons and more.
Detroit Cycling Championship sponsor partners include: Ford Motor Company, Chemical Bank, Cooper Standard, O’Keefe, Suburban Collection, Wico Metal, Motor City Harley Davidson, Brazen Sports, Atwater Beer, Conway Mackenzie, National Coney Island, Tim Hortons, HOUR Detroit, WXYZ and the Downtown Detroit Partnership.
