After a series of fits and starts for the plan to redesign the city’s Jackson Park and South Shore courses, Woods and his TGR Design team appear finally ready to begin the project that will seek to leave a legacy for future generations of golfers who are without the means to join a private club.
After playing as a youngster at the Jackson Park and South Shore golf courses in Chicago, Tiger Woods is now set to redesign the public courses in a way that will seek to benefit the entire city, CNN reported.
After a series of fits and starts for the ambitious project that has the backing of big names headed by former President Barack Obama and NBC golf commentator Mark Rolfing, Woods and his TGR Design team are preparing to begin the courses’ redevelopment as lead architects, and Woods enthused about the opportunity in a recently released film that was prepared for the Chicago Parks Golf Alliance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=9&v=m2trMM5ly5Q)
“We didn’t have enough money in our family to be part of a country club, so it was huge for us to be able to play on a public golf course,” Woods says in the film.
“To build a public golf course in Chicago is as good as it gets,” he adds. “You can see the skyline, it feels right down the road. It is truly amazing. We have the opportunity to create something so special.”
Woods was first associated with the project in 2016 (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/tiger-woods-commits-lead-designer-chicagos-jackson-parksouth-side-project/). A range of objections have been raised to the concept, even as concessions were made to community-based concerns (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/updated-plans-chicagos-south-side-course-still-raises-concerns/), but the development, which includes community programs such as a caddie scheme for youngsters, was given the potential go-ahead at a meeting of Chicago Park District’s Board of Commissioners in mid-December 2018, CNN reported, and work could now begin in 2019.
Woods learned the game on municipal courses of California and is keen to to use the Jackson Park project as an opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations of golfers who are without the means to join an exclusive club, CNN reported.
The privately funded project will involve a newly restored 18-hole golf course and a shorter family course on the urban banks of Lake Michigan, with substantial views of the city’s skyline. Woods has teamed up for it with Rolfing, who is head of the Chicago Parks Golf Alliance, and project leaders are also working in tandem with those behind the proposed Obama Presidential Center, which is set to be sited in Jackson Park, subject to federal approval, CNN reported.
