When it reopens after a $50 million renovation that will begin this fall, the former Furnace Creek Resort will be called the Oasis at Death Valley. The property’s inn and ranch will also be renamed, but its golf course will still be called Furnace Creek GC.
When an iconic resort in California’s Death Valley reopens after a $50 million renovation that will begin this fall, it will have a new look — and a new name, the Los Angeles Times reported. The former Furnace Creek (Calif.) Resort will now be called the Oasis at Death Valley, the Times reported.
The resort includes a 66-room inn, which opened in 1927 and is rated Four Diamonds by AAA, that will now also have a new name: the Inn at Death Valley, the Times reported. And the property’s 224-room ranch will become the Ranch at Death Valley. Both lodging units are located inside Death Valley National Park.
Why the name changes? It’s all about location, location, location, the Times reported. “At the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Glacier, the name of the park is in the name of the lodge,” Betsy O’Rourke, Chief Marketing Officer for the resort’s owner and operator, Xanterra Parks & Resorts, told the Times.
For nostalgic visitors, the golf course that’s 214 feet below sea level will retain the Furnace Creek name, the Times reported.
C&RB featured the course and its superintendent, Chris Bessette, in its October 2014 issue (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2014/10/keeping-cool/).
The $50-million makeover that is expected to start rolling out in late fall will bring 22 new luxury casitas to the inn’s Oasis Garden, the Times reported, and a new town hall and square will be added to the ranch.
Also, the renovated inn, which usually closes from Mother’s Day until October, will now be open year-round.
