Deadline Hollywood reports that David O. Russell, writer/director of American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, has teamed with Susannah Grant, writer of Erin Brockovich, to develop a 13-episode television series for ABC described as “an upstairs/downstairs soap opera…a modern-day Downton Abbey…that will be set at a private country club.”
Club managers have often privately joked—or lamented—how much of a soap opera their jobs can be. Now Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the ABC television network has contracted with two giants of the movie industry, David O. Russell and Susannah Grant, to capture those moments for a new TV series described as an “upstairs/downstairs soap, set at a private country club.”
According to Deadline Hollywood’s report, ABC has contracted with Russell, writer/director of American Hustle, currently nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, as well as Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter (both of which also earned those nominations), and Grant, writer of Erin Brockovich, to develop a 13-episode season for the still-untitled project, which Spinoff Online, another entertainment-news website, called “a bit like a modern-day Downton Abbey.”
The project will mark Russell’s first foray into television, Spinoff Online noted. The television story for the new series was co-written by Russell and Grant, and Grant then handled the actual teleplay. Russell will stay on as co-Executive Producer.
