The $267,000 facility at the Springfield, Mass. public course is being funded in part by a $150,000 grant from MGM Springfield, which opened a $960 million resort casino in the city in August. The 2,847-sq. ft. pavilion, scheduled for a mid-October opening, will be used by the city to host tournament dinners and other catered functions.
A $267,243 pavilion is under construction at the Franconia Golf Course in Springfield, Mass. and should be open by mid-October, MassLive.com reported. The project is supported by a $150,000 grant from MGM Springfield, which opened a $960 million resort casino in the city in August, with the city is funding the balance of the cost.
City officials and construction representatives gathered at the municipal golf course on October 1st as the initial framing was being erected on the newly installed concrete foundation, MassLive.com reported. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said the funds from MGM Springfield, under its host community agreement, are greatly appreciated.
The 2,847-sq.-ft., one-story pavilion will assist the city in hosting tournament dinners and other catered functions, officials said.
“The pavilion is a great addition to Franconia Golf Course and will offer the many tournaments and leagues that call Franconia home the opportunity to stay on site for their event,” Sarno said.
MGM Springfield is also promoting local attractions for its patrons, including the city’s municipal golf courses, officials said.
The pavilion “truly fits the history of the course,” said Patrick J. Sullivan, the city’s Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management. It is at the main entrance, adjacent to the clubhouse.
Franconia GC opened in 1929 with a golf course designed by John Van Kleek, Wayne Stiles and Geoffrey Cornish.
“The new pavilion mortise and tendon beams are a renaissance of past park construction and to the standards of building construction the year Franconia Golf Course was constructed,” Sullivan said. “The Park Department has a long history of benefactors contributing to improve the aesthetic quality of the park system, and we are proud to welcome MGM Springfield to the Springfield Park Department donors list.”
