The 501-room hotel, conference center and resort is being built as part of the half-billion-dollar PGA of America mixed-use development under construction in Frisco, Texas. Construction is already underway on two golf courses that will anchor the sprawling project and work recently started on the PGA headquarters building. Originally set to open in 2022 but delayed due to COVID, the project is now scheduled to debut in the spring of 2023.
Omni Hotels & Resorts is beginning work on its Omni PGA Frisco Resort, The Dallas Morning News reported. The 501-room hotel, conference center and resort is being built as part of the half-billion-dollar PGA of America mixed-use development under construction.
Construction is already underway on two golf courses that will anchor the sprawling project, The Morning News reported. And work recently started on the PGA headquarters building.
Now Dallas-based Omni Hotels is starting what will be its most elaborate destination property in North Texas, The Morning News reported.
“This is our first resort we are building from scratch,” said Omni president Peter Strebel. “The whole resort is going to be themed around Texas and golf.
“This is a major destination resort,” Strebel said. “People are going to want to come here from around the world.”
Designed by San Francisco-based SB Architects, the Frisco resort will have a different feel from the high-rise hotels Omni is known for in downtown Dallas and at the Dallas Cowboys’ Star development in Frisco, The Morning News reported.
The four- to seven-story buildings stretch along the PGA golf courses with extensive outdoor spaces, The Morning News reported.
“We are the only resort of this scale going up right now in North America,” Strebel said. “It’s going to be one of the best—if not the best—resort in the state of Texas.”
Omni PGA Frisco will include more than 125,000 sq. ft. of conference and meeting space, The Morning News reported. There will also be a full-service spa.
“We are going to have several swimming pools,” Strebel said. “There is a rooftop adults-only pool that is going to have an infinity edge on the sixth floor overlooking the golf courses.
“There is a pool for spa guests and a tiered family pool overlooking the golf courses.”
Golfers will have use of a 10-hole “executive golf course” and a 2-acre putting green, The Morning News reported.
“There is going to be a lounge by Top Golf,” Strebel said. “We are going to have five different culinary outlets ranging from a casual coffee shop up to a destination dining experience.”
The Frisco resort will also include seven 2,200-sq. ft., four-bedroom “golf villas,” The Morning News reported.
“Those are going to overlook the golf course,” Strebel said. “They are really like beautiful homes. They are going to be great VIP housing.”
All of the buildings will be constructed out of native stone, wood, metal and glass, The Morning News reported.
“Our theme is Texas modern,” Strebel said. “We wanted it to feel like some of the new modern ranch homes you are seeing built across the state.”
The Frisco resort has been in the works since the PGA announced in 2018 that it was moving its headquarters from Florida to North Texas, The Morning News reported. Originally set to open in 2022, the project is now scheduled to debut in the spring of 2023.
Strebel said the Omni PGA Frisco is already booking business based on planned PGA events. “We already have placed 26 championships from opening day to 2034,” he told The Morning News.
While the groundbreaking was delayed—like most real estate projects—due to COVID, Strebel said Omni used that time to refine the development and hammer out all the details, The Morning News reported.
“I’ve been involved in this project five-plus years,” he said. “These projects take time.”
Most of the Dallas-area construction starts were for industrial and apartment buildings, The Morning News reported. The Dallas-based company, which like most hotel operators was hard hit by the pandemic, is also starting a new hotel in Tempe, Ariz., and is finishing construction on a 1,000-room property in Boston.
“We feel we rounded the corner,” he said. “It was a rough year for us.”
Omni already has multiple U.S. resorts, including landmark properties such as the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va., and the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa north of San Diego in Carlsbad, Calif., The Morning News reported.
