The Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is joining with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and other organizations and companies to increase public awareness of the importance of workplace safety and health during the week of May 3 to 9, which has been declared North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The national kickoff will take place on Monday, May 4 at the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., while other events will take place across the country and worldwide.
Annually, more than 5,000 people die on the job, and four million more suffer from on-the-job illnesses and injuries. NAOSH Week is designed, according to organizers, around three primary objectives: 1) to increase employers’ understanding of the benefits of investing in occupational safety and health; 2) to raise awareness of the role and contribution of safety and health practitioners; and 3) to reduce workplace injuries and illness, by encouraging new workplace safety and health initiatives. The theme of this year’s NAOSH week is “Making Sure Workers Come Home Safely.”
