Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.—home to the Florida State University men’s and women’s golf teams—and Bowie (Md.) Golf Club have selected Troon, while Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. named Bobby Jones Links to manage its facility.
A pair of clubs in Florida and one in Maryland have selected management companies to handle day-to-day activities. Troon has been selected by Florida State University to manage Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. and Bowie (Md.) Golf Club, while Bobby Jones Links has been chosen to manage Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, will manage golf and club operations, food & beverage, golf course agronomy, and membership relations and marketing at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
Florida State University’s club hosted an NCAA Men’s Regional Championship this past spring. The golf course recently underwent a $10 million renovation in 2020 led by Nicklaus Design Company. The scope of the renovation included a complete redesign of the golf course, with only one hole remaining from the original routing.
The new Nicklaus Design golf course sits on 174 acres, measures 7,800 yards plays to a par 72, has two practice ranges and includes a new 12-hole par 3 course for the university’s golf teams. All tees, fairways, rough, bunkers, greens and cart paths are new.
Originally designed by Bill Amick, the course opened in 1962. For years, the club has served as the home of Florida State University’s men’s and women’s golf teams and still does today.
“Florida State has contracted with one of the premier organizations in the golf industry to ensure that our outstanding Seminole Legacy Golf Club continues to deliver an exceptional experience for our patrons and student-athletes,” said Florida State University Vice President for Finance and Administration Kyle Clark. “Under the new agreement, Troon will be responsible for all maintenance and management of the club, including the state-of-the-art facilities for our intercollegiate teams.”
Club amenities include The Burr Family Renegade Grill, a contemporary clubhouse, a golf shop and on-site PGA-certified staff.
Seminole Legacy offers a variety of memberships designed for Florida State University students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University. All current memberships, including student and faculty/staff memberships, will transfer under the new Troon management agreement with no change in fees.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Florida State University and Seminole Legacy Golf Club,” said Mitch Harrell, Executive Vice President, Troon Golf. “The newly renovated golf course is outstanding, the clubhouse is immaculate and the University’s commitment to providing members with a premier private club experience is clear. We’ll look to further elevate the member experience by delivering superior service, amenities and playing surfaces.”
Troon operates a number of facilities with college ties, including Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz., home of Arizona State University’s golf teams; Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill.; and Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa, home to the University of Iowa’s golf teams.
Bowie Golf Club, an 18-hole municipal facility, has been closed to play since October 1 after the city’s lease with the previous operator ended on September 30. Indigo Golf Partners, a Troon company, officially took over management of the club’s golf operations, food & beverage, golf course agronomy, and marketing on November 1 and immediately re-opened the golf course to play.
“We are excited to partner with the City of Bowie to manage Bowie Golf Club,” said Justin Smith, Regional Director of Operations, Indigo Golf Partners. “The club has a long history of providing affordable recreation to the residents of the City of Bowie and we look forward to continuing that tradition. With the course closed for the past month and a lack of historical information, we are having to start from scratch. Our team is working on new phone and computer systems, developing a new website and mobile app, and getting the course ready for the rest of this season and next. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through this transitional phase.”
Bowie Golf Club’s 18-hole golf course was designed by Frank Murray and Russell Roberts and first opened for play in 1959 under the name Belair Golf & Country Club. In 1982, the club’s name was changed to Bowie Golf & Country Club. The course has mature trees lining the fairways, Bent grass greens and plays to a par of 70, measuring 6,142 yards from the championship tees. The club also features an expansive practice range, a putting green and a pavilion picnic area.
Being selected to manage Eastpointe Country Club marks Bobby Jones Links’ second property in Florida in 2021. C+RB reported in April that the company would manage Bay Point Golf Club in Panama City, Fla.
“The Eastpointe Board of Governors chose Bobby Jones Links after conducting an extensive search for the right partner,” said Paul Rogers, President of the Board. “We concluded that Bobby Jones Links’ approach to enhancing the membership experience made it the best fit for Eastpointe CC.”
Eastpointe is partnering with Bobby Jones Links to continue forward momentum on its master plan to strengthen overall member experience and embrace a service-oriented culture. Under a full-management contract, Bobby Jones Links will oversee daily operations and provide additional support and services to current onsite associates. In addition, the company will help the club undergo a multi-phase renovation plan, which includes a new lifestyle amenity complex, The Pointe, scheduled to open in 2022. The complex will be the new hub of member activity with two pools, an indoor-outdoor dining concept and extensive fitness and wellness facilities.
“We are thrilled to be able to expand our footprint in Florida with the management of Eastpointe Country Club,” said Steve Willy, a founding partner of Bobby Jones Links. “Eastpointe is a premier club with a talented team that has a heap of accolades and experience under their belts, and we look forward to welcoming them into the Bobby Jones Links family.”
A member-owned club since 1974, Eastpointe includes two full-sized courses designed by Tom Fazio. The original East Course measures over 7,000 yards and includes a par 72 course featuring wide fairways and challenging green complexes, while the West Course, opened for play in 1982, spans 6,068 yards with narrow fairways and numerous water hazards. The club also features a fitness center, tennis courts and dining services.
