Fifty courses and more than 4,000 patrons teed off simultaneously in support of 9/11-related memorials and causes.
At 50 courses around the country, more than 4,000 golfing patrons teed off simultaneously on Tuesday, September 12 as part of GOLF 9/12, a grassroots, non-profit initiative that included after-play gatherings that raised funds for The Pentagon Memorial Fund, The 9-11 Memorial, Flight 93 Memorial, local First Responders, Armed Forces Charities and Friends of Freedom Charities.
Participating golfers teed off simultaneously at 2 PM EST and were connected, through a custom GOLF 9/12 mobile phone application, to live mobile scoring and a real-time leaderboard.
Participating courses included:
Sea Island Golf Club, St. Simons Island, Ga., where participating players included 2012 Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III and 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, along with PGA TOUR winner Brian Bateman, Nationwide Tour player Michael Sims and recent Georgia All-Americans Brian Harman and Hudson Swafford. Davis Love III has also teamed with Bridgestone Golf for a season-long effort to benefit GOLF 9/12, through which Bridgestone pledged to contribute $100 to GOLF 9/12 for every birdie that Love carded from the start of the 2011 PGA Tour season through September 11.
The Country Club of Columbus, Columbus, Ga., where players included 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman and a portion of one of the World Trade Towers was on site for photo opportunities. Immelman also supported the cause through his Trevor Immelman Foundation, with a “GOLF 9/12 Fairways for Freedom” promotion that will donate $10 for every fairway he hits during the PGA TOUR season, with corporations and fans able to pledge matching amounts.
Thornberry Golf Course, Oneida, Wis., where members of the Green Bay Packers staff were among participating players.
Sable Oaks Golf Club, South Portland, Maine, where elected officials were among participating players and “America’s Beloved Tenor,” Daniel Rodriguez, performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America.”
Forest Hills Golf Club, Augusta, Ga., which had served as a military golf course for nearly four decades, and where a “Color Guard” with local wounded veterans and police/firefighters escorted golf carts to the various starting holes.
Pavilion Development Company, TBC Corporation and its affiliate, Tire Kingdom, provided funding to help establish GOLF 9/12.
