David Richardson, Head Golf Professional at Soldiers Field Golf Course in Rochester, Minn. has announced his retirement after a 40-year career. Richardson began his career as an Assistant Professional at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. before becoming the Head Golf Professional at Owatonna (Minn.) Country Club.

Steve Carter, Superintendent of Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Cedar City, Utah was named the Utah Section PGA’s Superintendent of the Year. Carter has also worked at Logan (Utah) River Golf Course and spent four years as an assistant to Randy Oldham at the Logan (Utah) Country Club. Oldham won the Utah Superintendent of the Year award in 2020.

The GCSAA Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) named Ryan Flickinger, CFRE as Executive Director. Flickinger will focus on increasing philanthropic support of Foundation-funded programs such as First Green, the Golf Course Environmental Profile and scholarships and grants.

Joe Desch begins his two-year term as the new Chairman of the Western Golf Association (WGA), leading the WGA and Evans Scholars Foundation. An Evans Scholar Alum, Desch is a member of Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, Moraine Country Club in Dayton, Ohio, and Kiawah Island Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Golf Business Network named Dean Kandle, PGA as Vice President of Professional Development and Education. Kandle was most recently Head Golf Professional at St. Davids Golf Club in Wayne, Pa.

GGA Partners named Liz McDowell, CPA, CA, CCM as Director. McDowell was most recently Chief Operating Officer at York Downs Golf and Country Club in Markham, Ontario, Canada.

Landscapes Unlimited promoted Judd Chatelain to Senior Construction Estimator. A 22-year Landscapes Unlimited veteran, Chatelain played a key forecasting and facilitation role in the company’s work for the City of San Diego around its Torey Pines South Course for the 2021 U.S. Open.

The American Society of Golf Course Architects has added ASGCA Past President Jeff Brauer to its staff as Director of Outreach.

In Memoriam

Walter “Bud” Smith, the longtime owner of the Orange Hills Country Club in Orange, Conn., died at the age of 97. Smith became involved in the family golf business in 1949 and eventually took over ownership from his father in the mid-1950s. Smith was inducted into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame in 2000 under the Distinguished Service to Golf category. He was a lifetime member of the Connecticut Superintendents’ Association.
