Rockrimmon Country Club, situated on the Stamford, Connecticut and Pound Ridge, New York border has been described by Golf Magazine as a “Hidden Gem” for its meticulous Robert Trent Jones golf course and spectacular setting. Since its founding in 1947, It has been known for its small membership and as a casually elegant club in the country. Recently, the Club competed a substantial renovation of its facilities including a new grill room and bar, expanded outdoor patios, two new pools, expansion of the tennis complex as well as a complete re-decoration of the interior. This transformative project was guided by Judd Brown Designs who provided architecture and interior design services along with Wesley Stout Associates who handled the landscape architecture. The result is nothing short of stunning. All of the changes have been dramatic, but the centerpiece of the renovation project is the new upper patio, set between the grill room and the 18th hole. Prior to the renovation the patio was quite small and consisted of only a few teak tables which serviced golfers having cocktails. Outside dining was limited and even though the space was adjacent to some dramatic vistas, the views were blocked. It no longer served the needs of the membership which wanted a more robust outdoor experience. While our members were already seeking upgraded outdoor amenities prior to COVID, the pandemic transformed people’s habits and outside amenities have become even more important for all clubs. Rockrimmon’s project, conceived before the pandemic and built during it, is in complete step with these changing habits and priorities. Whether it be for purely lifestyle reasons or for health concerns, outdoor dining and activities are now vitally important. Our new patio provides our members with an outdoor experience that is dramatic and second to none. It has become the focal point of Club life. The changes are manifold. In particular, what was a small flagstone patio has been expanded to include both covered and uncovered dining areas. Framed by a beautiful blue and white striped awning, this amenity has truly transformed life at Rockrimmon. With its 40 seats under the awning and 45 seats un-covered, al fresco dining has become in demand most nights. Furthermore, with heaters for cool evenings and fans to cool in the summer, the short New England season has been expanded into the shoulder months adding value to Club membership. Adjacent to the dining area, a large conversational seating area has been created which had no precedent on the old patio. Here a complement of six couches provides a place for those who just want to sit with friends or guests and relax and have a few drinks. A stone fireplace, which also houses an outdoor TV provides the perfect backdrop and focal point for the new seating area. It is a wonderful place to watch the golf tournament or other sporting event. On any given afternoon or evening this area is abuzz with activity whereas before there just wasn’t a place to just come and relax. We find now that people come up to the Club just to see who is there on the patio. Further out and situated just away from the main patio is a cigar pit where members can go to have a cigar, tell golf stories and have a few drinks without affecting those eating on the patio. Conceived on the fly during construction, this amenity is extremely well used as it sits within sight of the 18th green and is a great place to watch (or heckle) golfers coming in. Furthermore, a compliment of 10 Adirondack chairs provides additional seating areas from which to watch the driving range or 18th hole. This array of amenities provides many areas for members to relax, interact and enjoy the Club and as a result, food and beverage sales continue to increase and membership engagement is at all-time high. Aside from the upgraded amenities, however, the new patio has also transformed the whole look and feel of the Club. Where the old patio had only a limited view of the 18th hole, the new patio with its blue and white awning, can be seen from the 18th tee box and provides dynamic backdrop to the 18th green. As part of the construction process, a small hill was removed and now the 18th green is in full view of the patio, creating a dynamic finishing hole. This dialog between the 18th green and the patio is now a signature feature of Rockrimmon Country Club! We are a casual and welcoming Club and our Members love to be able to watch players putt out, walk off the green and then welcome them onto the patio to join the fun. This lifestyle is what Rockrimmon is all about and the new patio has exceeded membership expectations in all respects.
