In the summer of 2022 Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club unveiled a brand-new dining patio as part of its wide-ranging golf course and dining renovation project. The patio, known as “Axe’s Place,” abuts the new Putting Green and nestles in perfectly amidst the lively elements of club life. Seated at a table on the patio, Members can watch their kids swimming happily in the pool, gaze at a showstopping water feature on the 18th green of the new champion golf course, or peer over the rolling hills for which the club is named. Beyond are sweeping views of the city of San Francisco. Transparent glass wind screens protect diners from Bay breezes, and robust umbrellas on cantilevered bases offer protection from the sun. In the evenings, Members gather around one of three cozy firepits and sit beneath twinkling bistro lights to relax and enjoy breathtaking sunsets. In addition to its modern design and convenient location, Axe’s Place represents the epitome of Member Satisfaction. It was constructed as part of a long-term capital project enacted in response to Member feedback desiring more casual dining spaces and more family-friendly accommodations. The newly released patio dining menu also responds to this feedback by showcasing a fantastic variety of fresh and healthy dishes sourced from California’s bountiful harvest. Seating is flexible and communal with a variety of two- and four-top cocktail and dining tables that can be easily reconfigured to host a tournament social, a special event, or everyday Member enjoyment. Perhaps the most beloved aspect of Axe’s Place is its namesake. Matthew Axelson grew up golfing in the area and worked on the Golf Operations team at Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club. After becoming a Navy SEAL, Petty Officer Axelson served in the US Navy for five years, earning a Purple Heart and a Navy Cross. After his death in Afghanistan as part of Operation Red Wings, Axelson was recognized by his hometown of Cupertino with a life-sized bronze statute. Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club is honored to name our al fresco dining patio after this man’s heroic acts of bravery.
