Mediterra’s recently refurbished tennis complex and the depth of its tennis programs have earned national honors from the United States Tennis Association.
The Sports Club was one of only 19 tennis facilities in the United States—and one of only two in Florida—recognized during the 32nd annual USTA Outstanding Facility Awards Program, which recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of public and private tennis facilities.
The club, honored in the private club category, recently improved the Naples community’s seven-court complex, adding grass-tiered stadium seating, a unique rounded court with extra playing surface and lighting. The improvements created space for 500 spectators and included landscaping and stone detailing. Mediterra was also praised for its implementation of USTA programs, including youth camps and other opportunities for children under 10.
The award was presented during the USTA’s semi-annual meeting on September 1 in New York City.
Built in 2000, The Sports Club at Mediterra offers seven full-size Har-Tru clay courts and a busy schedule of league play, round robins, lessons, clinics and special events, including an EleVen tennis clinic hosted by Venus Williams in 2012.
Facilities were judged on quality of court area, surface, enclosure and lighting and the overall design and adaption to the site. The awards committee also evaluated the facilities’ amenities, accessories, maintenance and its participation in USTA programs.
“We are proud of our tennis facilities and know our members are too,” said Tom Wallace, CEO of The Club at Mediterra. “Mediterra has a strong tennis culture and we are one of the finest facilities and most active programs in the area. We expect it to grow with the addition of Mike Baldwin, our new director of tennis and head tennis pro. His profound experience and enthusiasm for the game is unparalleled.”
Baldwin, ranked fifth in Florida in USPTA’s 35 singles and 40 doubles divisions, was hired after a national search. Named the professional organization’s district pro and volunteer of the year, he has overseen tennis programs at major clubs on Florida’s east coast.
Mediterra’s tennis complex also was recognized in 2004 for the top new outdoor tennis facility in the country by the United States Tennis Court & Track Builders Association and Tennis Industry magazine.
Mediterra offers an array of lifestyle amenities, including the member-owned Club at Mediterra with two Tom Fazio-designed championship courses and the private 10,000-sq. ft. Beach Club on the Gulf of Mexico, featuring an elevated swimming pool, casual dining with a full bar, and valet service for beach chairs, umbrellas and beverage and food menus.
