A balance between maintaining the history of the original Riker estate while incorporating a coastal vibe meshes with the area. The private rooms for meetings and other member usage options are well appointed and provide members with a home away from home.
The commitment to facilities is apparent. The staff takes pride in the appearance and cleanliness of all spaces, and the end result is a huge benefit to the membership.
Club House History
Originally an estate of Samuel Riker, the heart of the clubhouse remains a home constructed in 1912. Situated on a hilltop 140 feet above the Navesink River, the home was a mix of Italianate, French, and Georgian detail. It speaks more of an era instead of an architect.When the club was founded in 1963, the original Riker home had been expanded to include a "West Wing" for dining and events. As the membership expanded, the need for locker rooms and expanded pro shop were apparent. Late in 1964, the "East Wing" addition provided separate golf and swim locker rooms along with an expanded pro shop and new snack bar area. This project also resulted in the creation of four new guest rooms furnished entirely with items from the closing Savoy Plaza Hotel in New York City. At the time, the square footage of the clubhouse was 46,521.
Small renovations occurred over the next several decades, but there was sentiment supporting a total renovation and clubhouse expansion. In 2007, the membership approved a program that would add 16,966 square feet of space available to the membership. Working with Chambers and Ehret Construction, the new clubhouse opened to fantastic reviews in May 2010. The new clubhouse included a lower level dining and warming area for use during the club's ice skating season, replacement of the "West Wing", new front entrance, and all new dining and bar areas.
In 2015, Navesink worked with the McMahon Group on a capital projects focused survey to determine the best options for the future. For the membership, the results were clear in that the most desirable capital projects were increasing outdoor gathering spaces, renovating the pool, and revising dining spaces. With those results, work on a new renovation program began.
The pool area was renovated prior to the 2018 season with the program including a new children's area, new pavilion and pergola structures, decking, and construction of a pool bar that has become the center of summer usage. Simultaneously, work on the clubhouse and outdoor gathering spaces began.
From focus groups to design and construction administration, the club worked with Studio JBD-JGA on a project that has produced amazing results. Construction began in the fall of 2019 and opened to the membership in May of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted usage options of the clubhouse, but that only served to make the membership more excited to utilize the new spaces. With restrictions fully removed this past May, the membership is fully utilizing and loving the new clubhouse and outdoor gathering spaces.
