The main house, or clubhouse, is a large, impressive brick structure. Through the portico, with its beloved white pillars, one enters the Jefferson Room. The restored Jefferson Room features two large fireplaces for the gathering of Club members. Passing through a hallway, one reaches the library, an inviting room with thousands of books, two additional fireplaces, and beautiful furniture reminiscent of the house’s earlier years. The club has a number of additional spaces, such as, the Ballroom, Main Dining Room, Pine Room, employee Downtime Café, as well as multiple conference rooms.
Farmington’s Clubhouse offers members and their guests an array of culinary options. You can drop the kids off at Kids Club and enjoy a formal dining experience in the Blue Ridge Room. The Blue Ridge Room was added in the 1930s, but was extensively renovated in 2017.
Whether you’re dining inside or outside on the terrace, you can enjoy your dinner while taking in the breathtaking mountain views. You can also opt for a more casual atmosphere in the Farmington Grill, swing by the 10th Tee Snack Bar halfway through your round of golf, or lounge by the pool and enjoy food from the Poolside Grill. Our newly renovated state-of-the-art main kitchen allows our culinary staff to create and provide the highest quality experience possible.
The clubhouse is certainly a defining feature of Farmington and serves as the hub of the property, but it only represents a fraction of what the Club has to offer.
Avid and novice golfers alike will find Farmington a haven for the sport. Our 28 holes include the original south and north nines that make up Farmington’s main course, laid out by Fred Findlay in 1927. The main course is consistently recognized as one of Virginia’s top, most challenging traditional golf courses. Members also have access to a driving range, short game practice area, newly renovated putting green, a state-of-the-art indoor Golf Performance Center, a PGA award-winning Pro Shop and so much more.
Lovers of racquet sports enjoy 16 outdoor tennis courts (14 clay, two hard), three indoor tennis courts, three platform tennis courts, one dedicated pickleball court, as well as a full-service pro shop.
Other sports related amenities include: an 8,000 sq. ft. Fitness Center with strength training and cardiovascular equipment, group exercise rooms for cycle, aerobics, yoga and Pilates classes, a heated and fully lit eight-lane, 25-meter lap pool, massage facilities, locker rooms and more.
Farmington is proud of what it currently has to offer, but we’re just getting started. “Farmington 2027” was developed to keep our members’ lifestyle preferences current and to assure that Farmington Country Club continues to be the club of choice at 100 years of age. The plan maps out all of the renovations that have been, and will continue to be, made through 2027. A few of these renovations include a new Tennis Center, Fitness Studio Facility, Outdoor Recreation Facility and more.
No other club in Virginia offers Farmington’s blend of historic ambience, social and sporting activities, exceptional service and commitment to the future. Annual events at Farmington mark the seasons and shape traditions for generations of family members. Whether you come to Farmington for our outstanding sports amenities, myriad of social activities, or an intimate retreat from the world, you’ll appreciate our rich tradition of hospitality.
Club House History
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia resides Farmington Country Club; one of the most historic and esteemed private clubs in America. The list of what Farmington has to offer is exhaustive, but one of the Club’s most distinguishing features is the Clubhouse and its rich history. While maintaining and highlighting the Club’s architectural history is a major priority, it does not come at the expense of providing the membership with top tier, state-of-the-art amenities. The estate of Farmington was patented in 1735, and was first built upon prior to 1780. The main house, now the Clubhouse, was a spacious plantation home with an elongated wing that contained several guest rooms for the original owner’s extended family. Thomas Jefferson himself assisted in the planning and design of the original clubhouse, so the Jeffersonian architecture is prevalent throughout. The farm buildings consisted of rows of box stalls (since converted to locker rooms), large barns, and numerous other buildings.
Similar to the all-weather passageway at Monticello, a covered passageway with fascinating flying buttresses led the plantation’s residents from the main house to the stable. This passageway now leads our members and their guests to and from the Clubhouse, Fitness Center, swimming pool, and Farmington Grill. The Fitness Center and Grill were added in the late 1990s.
Almost all of the original buildings have been retained and updated to reflect the luxury of a newer age, while still maintaining the original charm. The guest wing has been converted into a “Guest Gallery” — a long row of rooms opening onto a balcony that makes for a delightful place to enjoy warm weather.
Since the Club opened in 1929, two additional guest galleries have been added, both in keeping with the original design. One is an extension of the first gallery and rests above what is now the Massage and Wellness Center. The second faces the First Tee of the Main Golf Course and is adjacent to the Farmington Grill.
