Overall, the existing clubhouse design had heavy materials and minimal natural daylight. Marsh and Associates sought to brighten up the spaces and seamlessly blend the addition with the existing clubhouse mountain style. From the outside, replacement of all existing windows coupled with extension of the existing exterior aesthetics played a key role in the overall cohesiveness between new and old.
The new fitness addition is a significant enhancement to the four-season active environment that is focused on golf and skiing exercises, including a circuit training program specifically designed for this club. The design team worked closely with one of the leading health and fitness providers of the PGA tour to create a smart gym that allows members to actively live life on their own terms through golf and ski focused exercises. The new fitness addition is strategically situated next to other innovative wellness amenities at the lower level including two new golf simulators and a brand-new cafe featuring food and drinks that promote a well-balanced lifestyle. Renovated men’s and women’s locker rooms and lounges are also conveniently located adjacent to fitness at the upper level.
The membership desired a clubhouse that would strengthen the indoor/outdoor experience. Marsh and Associates designed to renovate all dining spaces and expand the adjacent terraces maximizing the view; flooding the interior spaces with natural light; improving operations, experiences and flows throughout the building; blurring the boundary between inside and out; and bringing the dated building from dark and gloomy to light and fresh.
These improvements have positioned Country Club of the Rockies as one of the prominent clubhouses in the mountain region. “The largest impact (of the renovation) was the cultural change that occurred,” said Bill Hughes, the club’s general manager. “I had members tell me that they met more members this summer than in the 20 years they were members here.” The clubhouse renovation and addition were highly regarded by members and guests. In just a few short months the Club has seen huge success, including:
• Membership waiting list: Prior to the renovation, there were 85 Members (350 members total) on the wait list to be removed from Club membership. That has completely flipped, and now there is a wait list of six to seven years to become a member of the Club.
• Initiation fee: The initiation fee has increased from $95,000 before the renovation to $150,000 now.
• Golf: The Club is much more active now, and in 2021 a record number of golf rounds were played.
When speaking about the successes of the renovation and addition, Hughes said, “members are supporting the facility like never before to enjoy the new clubhouse.” A clear demonstration that the clubhouse was successfully planned and designed.
