The new contract with Billy Casper Golf is for five years, with 15 additional one-year renewal options. The management fee starts at $40,000 the first year and increases by about $800 per year. City equipment will be used for the work.
The city of Charlottesville, Va. has awarded a five-year contract for maintenance at Meadowcreek Golf Course, its municipal course, that will cost $208,000 in management fees, The Daily Progress of Charlottesville reported.
The city recently posted a notice on its website of the contract awarded to Billy Casper Golf LLC for the maintenance services, The Daily Progress reported. The agreement is for five years, with 15 additional one-year renewal options. The management fee starts at $40,000 the first year and then increases by about $800 per year.
While revenue levels at Meadowcreek have remained fairly consistent over the past few years, The Daily Progress reported, increased expenses and decreased usage have made the 18-hole golf course more of a drain on city funds.
The city has transferred money from its general fund to subsidize the course, allocating $963,276 in fiscal 2019 to fund the management, operations and maintenance of the course, The Daily Progress reported. That compares to about $880,000 that was allocated in fiscal 2015.
The allocated funds, Parks and Recreation Brian Daly told The Daily Progress, covered salaries and benefits. “Pure maintenance costs” for Meadowbrook typically range between $400,000 and $500,000, Daly added.
According to city documents, total maintenance, management and operations costs, to be paid to Billy Casper Golf, would be $425,000 annually, including the $40,000 management fee, The Daily Progress reported.
Daly said the final costs could change depending on how much work is done. “Even if it ends up the same, we expect a higher quality of course conditions,” he noted.
Required services include mowing of greens and fringes, insecticide application and maintaining and winterizing irrigation systems. Billy Casper Golf can use city equipment for the work, The Daily Progress reported.
