Top-prize winner of “Think Ahead” contest will meet head greenskeeper at Royal St. George’s Golf Club and other leading courses in Great Britain, and play Bearwood Lakes.
Matt Whalen, Superintendent at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Country Club, is traveling to the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England as the winner of the Think Ahead Sweepstakes sponsored by John Deere Golf. During the week-long trip, Whalen will have the opportunity to meet the head greenskeeper and staff at Royal St. George’s, and mingle with some of the most respected greenskeepers in Great Britain. In addition, Whalen will play Bearwood Lakes, one of the top 100 golf courses in Great Britain, and receive a tour of the facility.
“We’re thrilled to host Matt Whalen at this historical championship,” said Gregg Breningmeyer, Global Director, Sales and Marketing, John Deere Golf. “This is a great opportunity to experience the excellence of our global industry, and is our way of showing appreciation for the hard work superintendents do every day.”
Reports on Whalen’s experiences during his trip will be featured on the John Deere Facebook page and Twitter feed during the week of the Open Championship.
Golf course industry professionals had the opportunity to enter the sweepstakes, which was open from Janurary 13 through May 31, by watching a video on the John Deere Golf website, or taking a brief tour of the John Deere booth at the Golf Industry Show (GIS). Five iPads were also awarded as prizes.
