The Pleasanton, Calif. club will now be known as The Club at Castlewood and will begin in the spring of 2021 to renovate its clubhouse, which was once a Hearst family estate, and also to create a new Sports Center. The clubhouse enhancements will include more internal open space, new and extended indoor and outdoor dining and social areas, and new fitness and wellness resources.
Castlewood Country Club, a Troon Prive-managed private club in Pleasanton, Calif., announced that it has evolved its named to “The Club at Castlewood” as it moves forward to bring significant new enhancements and improvements to its clubhouse and to create a new Sports Center through a multimillion-dollar Castlewood Remodel Project that will commence in the spring of 2021.
C+RB reported on the club’s plans for the improvements after Castlewood’s membership rejected a sale to the Bay Club in 2019 (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/addressing-ada-concerns-among-plans-to-reinvigorate-california-club/, https://clubandresortbusiness.com/castlewood-cc-members-nix-vote-to-negotiate-with-the-bay-club/)
The renovation of the main clubhouse, which was originally designed and built by George and Phoebe Hearst (parents of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst) as the Hacienda del Pozo de Verona estate, will bring enhancements including more internal open space, new and extended indoor and outdoor dining and social areas, new fitness and wellness resources, and more.
The estate was purchased in 1924 by local businessmen, and the mansion served as the clubhouse for the original Castlewood Country Club and was frequently played by Bobby Jones and other golfers of the era, with stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood often in attendance.
“We are very excited to be embarking on this major remodel of our historic club, which will provide Castlewood members with a modern, wholly-enriching lifestyle experience,” said President Rick Barraza. “The Castlewood name itself is steeped in history, hosts our traditions and is home to the memories we all create together.
“‘The Club at Castlewood’ more accurately reflects the active, family-forward lifestyle characterized by quality experiences, engaging activities, and the modern amenities our members will enjoy,” Barraza added.
“Beginning with our heritage as Phoebe Hearst’s visionary architectural achievement, our identity has been shaped by the generations of staff, members and guests who have walked these halls and evolved our club into what it is today,” said General Manager John Vest. “We believe ‘The Club at Castlewood’ represents a refresh in what we offer to our community—a renewed spirit of inclusivity with a sense of place.”
The Club at Castlewood also features two championship 18-hole golf courses — Hill and Valley — and a highly-regarded Cliff Drysdale Tennis racquet program featuring tennis and pickleball, as well as a recreational family swimming pool, bocce and a competitive aquatics team program, among many other activities.
Culinary offerings include seasonal menus created around local farm-to-table items and an outstanding wine culture. Castlewood members enjoy a full calendar of social activities and events for all ages, with the clubhouse able to host private events for up to 350 people when allowed.
