According to the township of Exeter, Pa., which owns the club, the banquet facility and restaurant operator broke the lease agreement, and the township had previously given the business a 30-day notice of eviction. The township has made efforts to accommodate events already scheduled at the facility.
Castle Pub by ViVA, the banquet facility and restaurant at Reading (Pa.) Country Club, closed on December 14, the Reading Eagle reported.
Exeter Township Manager John Granger announced the closure in a written statement. According to the Allentown, Pa.-based WFMZ-TV 69 News, ViVA broke the lease agreement it had with the township, which had previously given the business a 30-day notice of eviction.
The township also asked Viva for a list of its scheduled events. One of those events was Kennedy Tool & Die’s Christmas party for its employees and retirees and their spouses Thursday night. The township offered to host its party at another location, but it declined, WFMZ-TV reported.
The township said it is still working with other groups that have events booked at the country club through the weekend to make other arrangements, WFMZ-TV reported.
Berks County Sheriff Eric J. Weaknecht said his deputies served court documents to ViVA on December 14, stating that Exeter Township had taken possession of the premises, the Eagle reported.
Exeter Township bought the club for $11.9 million on January 15, 2006. According the township website, Exeter has relied on real estate taxes to pay the overwhelming majority of the facility’s debt service, the Eagle reported.
