The property located outside Wilmington, N.C. has already begun work to restore each sand bunker on its Tim Cate-designed golf course to its original integrity, prior to disruptions caused by Hurricane Florence in the fall of 2018. Greens will also be converted from bentgrass to hybrid Bermuda, with a reopening scheduled for September 2.
Cape Fear National in Leland, N.C., just outside Wilmington, N.C., which features an award-winning Tim Cate-designed course, will undergo a comprehensive renovation of its greens and bunkers.
The extensive project, overseen by Billy Casper Golf, will convert greens from bentgrass to hybrid Bermuda grass, and restore each sand bunker to its original integrity, prior to disruptions caused by Hurricane Florence in the fall of 2018.
While the bunker project is already underway, Cape Fear began re-surfacing greens on June 3 and will re-open on September 2, 2019.
The enhancements are part of the largest overhaul of the property in the history of the club, which was built in 2010. C+RB featured Cape Fear National as the cover story in its April 2010 issue, when the property was managed by KemperSports (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/the-bold-new-plan-at-cape-fear-national/).
“The Wilmington community was effected by Hurricane Florence in so many ways, and one was enjoying the game of golf on the North Carolina coast,” said Kris Reinert, Cape Fear National’s General Manager. “We look forward to bringing back our course better than ever and remaining a top golf destination in the Southeast.”
The Cape Fear National golf course winds through heavily undulating land and features several bridges through wetlands as well as three waterfalls and beach bunkers, all flanked by native southeast North Carolina grasses and wildflowers. The layout has five sets of tees, with the course measuring 7,217 yards from the championship tees.
“Tim Cate was given the task to build the best golf course in the Wilmington market and exceeded expectations,” said Paul Hughes, Cape Fear National’s Superintendent. “He was given the resources to create a challenging, visually stunning layout, and now with the guidance of Billy Casper Golf, we look forward to making sure everyone can enjoy their experience here for years to come.”
