The Cleveland, Ohio property will host the Web.com Tour Finals event September 8-11, then begin the renovation as part of a capital investment program. The golf course renovation will update infrastructure, drainage, tees and bunkers, while upgrading the clubhouse with Wi-Fi, audio-visual equipment, and renovated restrooms.
Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio will host the DAP Championship, a Web.com Tour Finals event, September 8-11, 2016. Immediately following the tournament, the club will begin a $1.2 million golf course renovation project, part of a Capital Investment program approved by the membership in July 2015.
The extensive golf course renovation project will bring its infrastructure up to date and improve the playing characteristics of the golf course. State-of-the-art techniques will be applied to golf course drainage, tee and bunker reconstructions under the direction of golf course architect Bruce Hepner of Hepner Golf Design. Six miles of drainage pipe will be infused into the layout to help keep the golf course playable in wet conditions. The 108 bunkers will be rebuilt using the latest “Billy Bunker” technique to create a cohesive and classic Herbert Strong style. The new drainage will resist washouts and allow a consistent and attractive golf hazard. Twenty tee boxes will be newly constructed or rebuilt, providing members proper teeing ground for all levels of golfers.
The capital investment program will also include new amenities at the swimming pool, the installation of state of the art audio, Wi-Fi, and visual equipment throughout the clubhouse and exterior patios, and a renovation of all restrooms.
The DAP Championship benefiting The LeBron James Family Foundation is the first of four Web.com Tour Finals Events to determine which 50 players will earn their PGA TOUR cards. PGA TOUR players who finish 126-200 on the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Point List and players 1-75 from the Web.com Tour’s Regular Season Money List will descend upon Canterbury to play in a four-day stroke play event and compete for a $1,000,000 purse. All four rounds of the DAP Championship will air live on the Golf Channel throughout the week.
The LeBron James Family Foundation strives to positively affect the lives of children and young adults through education and co-curricular education initiatives. One such initiative is the Akron I Promise Network, in which Akron children not only pledge to finish high school, but also strive to be leaders in their community.
Canterbury is only one of two clubs in history to have hosted all five of the Men’s Major Championships that rotate sites: U.S. Open, PGA Championship. U.S. Amateur, Senior U.S. Open, and Senior PGA Championship. Past Champions at Canterbury include Walter Hagen, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Mark O’Meara, and many more.
