The private club, which was founded in 1867 by President Millard Fillmore, received the designation on April 22 from the National Register of Historic Places. The foundation running the club will now be able to tap into state and federal tax credits related to renovations made to the 151-year-old building’s exterior or for maintaining the HVAC system or other parts of its infrastructure.
The National Register of Historic Places on April 22 designated the Buffalo (N.Y.) Club as a landmark, Buffalo Business First reported. New York state is also expected to list the private club, which was founded in 1867 by President Millard Fillmore, as a landmark.
The designations come following requests made by the Buffalo Club and Buffalo Preservation Board, Buffalo Business First reported.
Last year a 501-3c, the Buffalo Club Preservation Foundation, was created specifically for that purpose, Buffalo Business First reported. The foundation will be able to tap into state and federal tax credits related to many renovations made to the building’s exterior or maintaining such things as the HVAC system, said Club President Anthony Baynes.
Other private clubs such as the Garret Club and the Saturn Club already have historic designations, Buffalo Business First reported.
The building was constructed in 1870 for Buffalo businessman Van Rensselaer Watson, founder of Erie County Savings Bank (now part of M&T Bank) , Buffalo Business First reported. The Buffalo Club, led by Fillmore and President Grover Cleveland, moved into the building in 1887.
Various additions were designed by such local architects as E.B. Green and Edward Kent, Buffalo Business First reported.
