A boy pulled Friday from the pool at Woodhaven Country Club died Saturday at Kosair Children’s Hospital, Metro Louisville deputy coroner Jack Arnold said.
The Louisville Metro Police Department said that Keegan Adkins, 6, drowned at the Woodhaven Country Club, on Saturday, June 25th and was pronounced dead at Kosair Children’s Hospital just less than 24 hours after being taken there.
The coroner said the boy’s injuries were consistent with drowning, reports WLKY Louisville.
“At the scene, the mother said it was an accident. She was there watching her son, turned around to get a chair, and he was gone,” Gary Fields, the family’s spokesman, said.
Fields said the boy was wearing goggles and diving for toys when he became submerged in the country club’s pool.
Police said two bystanders quickly tried to rescue Adkins—an off-duty LMPD officer immediately called for help from his police car, and a nurse performed CPR until EMS arrived.
“The cause of death is consistent with drowning,” Arnold said, adding that Keegan died from anoxic brain injury, a condition that results when the brain is deprived of oxygen five minutes or longer.
Woodhaven Country Club’s pool manager, Leslie Lintelman, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment, reports The Courier-Journal.
“She (mother) knew they were doing the best (they could). Everyone did the proper thing. There was no chaos. It was orderly. The general manager even came out, prayed with them and had everybody get back,” Fields told WLKY Louisville.
