Emergency responders were called out to reports of a vehicle in the pond with a male victim floating outside the car. Divers were deployed to make sure no other victims were in the car. It is believed the victim got lost and turned down the wrong road before accidentally driving into the pond; foul play was not suspected.
A body was pulled from a pond on the golf course of the Knollwood Fairways & Driving Range in Southern Pines, N.C. on Sunday morning, May 21, after a car became submerged in the water, WRAL TV 5 of Raleigh, N.C. reported.
Emergency responders were called out just after 10:30 am after a nearby resident reported a vehicle in the pond with a male victim floating outside of the car, reports said. The first units arriving on the scene determined the victim was deceased and the area was sealed off pending an investigation by law enforcement.
The car, a Mazda MX6 with Virginia plates, remained submerged for several hours before it was removed, WRAL reported. According to officials, the car was not damaged when it was pulled from the water.
A diving team from Moore County, N.C., was deployed to make sure no other victims were in the car.
Officials believe the incident occurred overnight, WRAL reported, and no one spotted the car and body until daylight. It is believed that the victim got lost and turned down the wrong road before accidentally entering the pond. According to police, foul play was not suspected.
“There is no indication on the body and no indication on the vehicle at this time that there was any foul play, so right now we’re just investigating it as an accident and we’ll try to figure out the logistics of why he was on the golf course,” Southern Pines Police Chief Bob Temme told The Pilot of Southern Pines, N.C.
The identity of the victim had not been released. Station WTVD ABC 11 of Durham, N.C., and the Aberdeen (N.C.) Times reported that the victim was a black male believed to be in his 40s or 50s.
Although no foul play was suspected, the victim was scheduled to be sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The pond is in the middle of the golf course between two fairways and nowhere near a paved road, the Aberdeen Times reported. Officials remained on the scene until around 3:00 pm investigating this incident and trying to determine how the vehicle ended up in the pond.
