The facility in San Diego, Calif. is now called The Heights Golf Club. “Our members have always called it ‘the Heights,'” says Paul Devine, the club’s general manager. “. . .Our members gave it that nickname so we are embracing the tradition.” Dropping country club from the name better reflects the 100-acre facility, which does not have a pool, tennis court or fitness center.
The Bernardo Heights Country Club in San Diego, Calif. has a new name. It is now The Heights Golf Club, the Rancho Bernado News Journal reported.
“We’re excited about it as the club has been open for close to 40 years,” said general manager Paul Devine. “Our members have always called it ‘the Heights.’ We are on top of a hill and have a view. Our members gave it that nickname so we are embracing the tradition.”
Members were informed of the new name during a celebration last month, the Rancho Bernado News Journal reported.
The new name will be distinct from other facilities that have Rancho Bernardo or Bernardo in their name, including the Rancho Bernardo Inn, Country Club of Rancho Bernardo and Bernardo Heights Community Center, the Rancho Bernado News Journal reported.
People sometimes showed up at the Bernardo Heights Country Club when they were trying to get to one of those other places, Devine said.
“We’ve spent $6 million in the last five years on new fairways, inside the club and expanding the patio and dining area,” he said. “It has a new feel and this helps identify us better in the community.”
Dropping country club from the name better reflects the 100-acre facility, which does not have a pool, tennis court or fitness center — typical offerings of country clubs, the Rancho Bernado News Journal reported.
“We offer dining, beverages and social activities at a golf club,” Devine said.
The restaurant, open only to members, has been renamed The Heights Grill.
The Heights’ parent company, Club Corp, is also undergoing a rebranding and will be changing its name to Invited, according to Devine. Member benefits include being able to access the company’s other clubs across the country, the Rancho Bernado News Journal reported.
“We have done a lot of things that help by reinvesting in the club for the long term, improving the experience,” Devine said. “The course is in great shape. We installed a well six or seven years ago, so it is mostly well water (irrigation) rather than potable.”
Other improvements have included a pro shop renovation that concluded last month, the Rancho Bernado News Journal reported. And there is more to come that will make it “a great club for many generations,” Devine said.
