Alternative Entries to Golf Continue to Emerge

Club Regatas

A food-and-entertainment destination in West Des Moines, Iowa and a club in Lima, Peru are the most recent locations to do their parts in growing the game of golf. Putts & Pins features gamified mini golf, duckpin bowling and arcade games with an electric pop vibe inspired by ’80s and ’90s rock culture, while Club Regatas has introduced a certified Pitch and Putt layout designed by Agustin (Augie) Pizá, Founder of Pizá Golf.

A restaurant and bar with mini golf and a state-of-the-art pitch-and-putt course are the two most recent examples of properties providing innovative entries into the world of golf.

RealFood Hospitality, Strategy & Design, a premier hospitality strategy and design firm meeting the foodservice design, development and business objectives of the global foodservice industry, has been selected as the operational management company for Putts & Pins, the newest food-and-entertainment destination in West Des Moines, Iowa. RealFood provides management services to a select portfolio of hospitality venues, managing and supervising daily operation functions, with Putts & Pins added to the company’s portfolio earlier this year. A new development and first-of-its-kind concept in the West Des Moines area, Putts & Pins is the vision of local owners and real estate developers, Mitchell Kann and Eric Kann.

Putts & Pins is a bar and restaurant featuring gamified mini golf, duckpin bowling and arcade games. The venue has an electric pop vibe inspired by ’80s and ’90s rock culture, designed as a local gathering place for all ages. The highly anticipated grand opening occurred in November, featuring a menu of familiar American fare with an elevated twist.

Putts & Pins

Aptly named to ignite nostalgia, the menu was designed with crowd-pleasers like Shake ‘n’ Bake Chicken, Not Your Canned Spaghetti O’s, Walkman Wings with Chef’s own sauce, Not Your Dorm Room Ramen and Do Anything For Love Meat Loaf, which is house-made with a signature beef blend. Shareable appetizers, sandwiches, wraps, salads and bowls round out the expansive food menu; and the bar is fully stocked with spirits, craft cans, seltzers, and zero-proof libations, while 12 taps pour local brews and other draft favorites. Rock-themed cocktail recipes complement the food menu with equally imaginative names like the mezcal-based ‘Oasis,’ and green-hued gin concoction, ‘Green Days.’

The venue features two interactive 9-hole mini golf courses (‘Rewind’ and ‘Fast-Forward’), four duckpin-bowling lanes, a full arcade with billiards, shuffleboard, vintage arcade games and TVs tuned to sports and entertainment, as well as a ‘Backstage’ event space available for private parties, complete with exclusive access to a mini golf course, duckpin-bowling lanes and full-service bar.

RealFood, a Troon company, developed the restaurant concept and food-and-beverage programming, and provides ongoing operational management for Putts & Pins.

Pizá Golf, internationally recognized as one of the most innovative golf course design firms, introoduced a new Pitch and Putt short course at Club Regatas, a social and sports club located in Lima, Peru.

“I want to thank Club Regatas for placing their trust in us and particularly golf committee director Alvaro Dammert who played a key role in the success of this short game facility,” said Agustin (Augie) Pizá, Founder of Pizá Golf.

Club Regatas commissioned Pizá Golf to design a Pitch and Putt short course based on an official set of distances and rules to have the International Pitch and Putt Federation recognize the short course on the International Circuit. In addition, #multipurposegolf and #wellnessgolf needed to be an integral part of the design to enhance the welfare of Club Regatas and to grow the game of golf in Peru.

“This is the first time an official pitch and putt golf course has been recognized in the country. We are so proud to be a part of golf history in Peru,” said Pizá. “Peru will host annual international competitions and in fact, the club held its first inaugural tournament on Dec. 1, 2023, and I was fortunate enough to participate.”

Forty players participated in the first Pitch and Putt tournament in Peru, including women and men. Twenty of players which were from Chile and the El Regatas and its board represented the remaining 20, which included the club’s President, Jaime Cornejo, Vice-President Carlos Ravettino, Treasurer Director Luis Blomberg, Sports Directors José Antonio Tord and Charles Cannok, and Secretary-Director Marita Guinand.

Players and the Federation of International Pitch and Putt Association (FIPPA) were represented by Vice-President Patricio Rubel, as well as the Chilean Pitch and Putt Federation, represented by Vice-President Pablo Caviedes.

“These governing agencies and their dignitaries were pleasantly impressed by the Pitch and Putt design at Club Regatas,” added Pizá. “I am passionate about growing the game of golf globally and I’m thrilled how these influential people plan to use the Pitch and Putt for Peruvians in the future.”

Club + Resort Business featured Pizá on the Club + Resort Talks podcast, where he talked about #multipurposegolf and #wellnessgolf, as well as many other topics. In another episode of the podcast, Editor Rob Thomas and Senior Editor Phil Keren discussed the “golfertainment” trend.
