The fate of the three-year-old, $50 million golf club developed by auto-parts billionaire Frank Stronach near Ocala, Fla., remains up in the air, after it announced its closing on July 11 with terse messages on its phone system, a sign on its gates and in a communication to members.
Adena Golf & Country Club in Ocala, Fla. closed its doors abruptly on July 11th, leaving golfers and employees alike wondering about the future of the three-year-old facility, the Ocala Star Banner reported.
The Star Banner reported that the club announced the closing with a message on its phone system that said simply, “We regret that the club [has] officially closed its doors and is no longer open for business as of Wednesday.”
On the 11th, visitors to the club were greeted with a sign that simply read “Club is closed” on one of its gates, and the club’s website and Facebook page were deleted, the Star Banner reported.
The newspaper also reported on the contents of a message that it obtained that had been sent to club members announcing the closing.
“It is with immense regret and sadness that we announce the closure of Adena Golf & Country Club, a place that we have all worked hard to make the finest private club in all of Florida,” the message said. “However, despite our best intentions, we can no longer bring you the first-class membership experience that you have come to enjoy at Adena.”
Adena G&CC opened in 2015, the Star Banner reported, as the brainchild of Frank Stronach, a billionaire who made much of his fortune as the founder of what would become Magna International, the largest auto parts manufacturer in North America.
According to the Star Banner, Stronach also runs Adena Springs South, a thoroughbred horse farm in northwest Marion County, Fla. and the Creek Ranch cattle operation near Fort McCoy in that county.
The future plan for the country club property was not clear, the Star Banner reported. A call to Stronach’s thoroughbred farm on inquiring about the club got a “No comment” from a woman who identified herself as Heather Martin.
Laura O’Malley at The Stronach Group’s headquarters in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, told the newspaper that she was not able to discuss the status of the club.
According to the newspaper, it was not clear how many employees the club had as of its closing.
