The Longs, S.C. property operated by Founders Group International will now offer 18 holes through its Meadows and Highlands nines, with two additional holes available as needed. “It does give us some flexibility if we need to close a hole,” said FGI President Steve Mays. The seven holes that were closed were the most susceptible to flooding and do not have housing along them, making for an “easier decision,” Mays added.
Founders Group International (FGI) has permanently closed seven of the 27 golf-course holes at Aberdeen Country Club in Longs, S.C. and will continue to operate the facility as an 18-hole course with two additional holes available as needed, The Sun News of Myrtle Beach, S.C. reported.
The club’s 18-hole course will now be a 6,711-yard par-72 consisting of the Meadows and Highlands nines, The Sun News reported.
“It does give us some flexibility if we need to close a hole,” said Steve Mays, President of FGI, which owns and operates the course along with 20 others in the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand region.
The closed holes were on the Woodlands nine, which is most susceptible to flooding because it is closest to Buck Creek, and does not have housing along the holes, The Sun News reported.
“That made it an easier decision because no one is impacted by us closing those seven holes,” Mays said.
The course at Aberdeen CC is a Tom Jackson design that opened in 1989 as Buck Creek Golf Club, The links-style course was inspired by the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Scotland, according to the Aberdeen CC website.
The course has had flooding issues after hurricanes and other rain-heavy weather events, including a few times in the past six years, The Sun News reported.
