A sign on the Land O’ Lakes, Fla., property’s clubhouse door that told golfers it was “temporarily closed until further notice” proved accurate, as the 148-acre property has reopened a week later. Jayson Ray, who has co-owned the golf course with Steve McDonald and Mitch Osceola since 2011, told the Tampa Bay Times: “We got some money.”
Golfers could once again tee off at Plantation Palms Golf Club when it reopened on August 16, a week after it closed suddenly, the St. Petersburg (Fla.)-based Tampa Bay Times reported.
The 148-acre, Land O’ Lakes, Fla., golf course closed the weekend of August 10 via a note on the clubhouse door that read “temporarily closed until further notice,’” C&RB reported last week (“Plantation Palms GC Closes”).
“We got some money,” said Jayson Ray, who has co-owned the course with Steve McDonald and Mitch Osceola since 2011.
Owners would not comment on the closing last week, and Ray would not say how the business obtained the cash to reopen. But he did say that his course, like others, has struggled in recent years, the Times reported.
“It’s the economy,” Ray said, adding that the Tampa Bay area has an overabundance of golf courses.
Records show that the company that owns the golf course, MJS Golf Group LLC, owes Pasco County $83,000 in back taxes on about 15 separate parcels since 2011. Steve Pitts, owner of Steve’s World of Golf, pulled his pro shop out several months ago after it failed to collect $34,000 from MJS. Pitts, who sued MJS, said he hoped to work things out and reopen at Plantation Palms, the Times reported.
The closing left some players scrambling, including the Land O’Lakes High School boys’ golf team, which practices there, the Times reported.
Hours will remain the same as before. The course will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, while the grill will be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fees are $36 in the morning and $25 in the afternoons, the Times reported.
