The city of Flowood, Miss., is planning to build a 200-room luxury hotel and a 54,000-sq. ft. conference center adjacent to The Refuge. The golf course will also benefit from new and and enlarged cart paths, redesign of several holes, new turf on all the greens and a cart storage facility, with work expected to take up to 18 months.
Over the past two decades, The Refuge Golf Course in Flowood, Miss., has found its niche in a crowded metro-area golf community as the best purely public golf course in the area. It now appears the city is ready to take it to the next level, the Jackson, Miss., Clarion Ledger reported.
On June 8, the city and MCC Real Estate rolled out a plan to construct a conference center and hotel adjacent to the course to make it a one-of-a-kind destination. The $50 million project will include a 200-room luxury hotel and a 54,000-sq. ft. conference center. The city will own the conference center and MCC, a New Orleans-based development company, will operate and manage it concurrently with the hotel, the Ledger reported.
Preliminary plans are for the hotel to include a resort-style pool, a 15-acre lake with walking paths and a lawn adjacent to the lake capable of accommodating weddings and other outdoor events, complete with a “spacious spa and culinary school,” said MCC CEO Joseph Jaeger.
The hotel will include white table cloth dining and lounge areas overlooking the lake and golf course, the Ledger reported.
As part of the project, Flowood will be making significant upgrades to the course, including new and enlarged cart paths, redesign of several holes, new turf on all the greens and a cart storage facility. The cost of that construction is yet to be determined, but the process will require the course to close for an estimated year to 18 months, the Ledger reported.
Site development is anticipated to begin within the next few months with construction of the hotel and conference center to start in early 2018, the Ledger reported.
The Mississippi Development Authority has approved the project for the Mississippi Tourism Sales Tax Program to incentivize the development near the Jackson Medgar Evers International Airport. Likewise, the Rankin County Board of Supervisors and Rankin First Economic Development have committed funding to ensure that the project becomes a reality, the Ledger reported.
