The project at the Bluffton, S.C. club used GPS coordinates to restore green complexes on the East course, one of two designed for the property by Tom Fazio, to their original size. The project also resurfaced greens with TifEagle grass and fairways, tees and collars with Latitude 36 bermudagrass, and upgraded bunkers with the Capillary Concrete drainage system and G-angle sand.
Belfair, the private golf club community in Bluffton, S.C., has reopened its East course following a four-month renovation project, reported Golf Course Architecture.
Belfair has two golf courses designed by Tom Fazio–the West and East–which opened in 1996 and 1999 respectively. The East course is a par-71 layout measuring 6,900 yards from the championship tees and is inspired by the links courses of Scotland, but also showcasing the area’s freshwater lakes and lagoons.
Using GPS coordinates gathered from Fazio’s original design, green complexes have been updated to their original size, Golf Course Architecture reported. Greens were resurfaced with TifEagle grass, while fairways, tees and collars were resurfaced with Latitude 36 bermudagrass.
Bunker renovations included updating the drainage in all greenside and fairway bunkers with the Capillary Concrete bunker system, as well as filling the new bunkers with G-Angle sand, Golf Course Architecture reported
“The West course at Belfair already ranks as one of the top 100 private residential courses in the U.S.,” said Ray Pilch, President of the Belfair Property Owners Association. “With this renovation and enhancement, we are hopeful of achieving similar recognition for the East course as well.”
Belfair’s Director of Agronomy, Keith Einwag, and Troon’s Senior Vice President of Golf Dourse Development, Ron Despain, oversaw the project, with construction work completed by McDonald and Sons, Golf Course Architecture reported.
The project is part of Belfair’s long-range plan to reinvest more than $20 million into the club and community over the next ten years.
