The largest gated community in South Carolina’s Upstate region, with nearly 3,500 residents, has broken ground on a project that will include updating the George Cobb-designed championship golf course, modernizing the country club, introducing a contemporary, fast-casual dining venue, expanding the Fitness and Racquet Center, and adding a second, 2 ½-mile paved walking trail.
The Board of Directors of the Keowee Key community in Salem, S.C. has announced a $14 million makeover of the largest gated community in South Carolina’s Upstate region.
For the property located on Lake Keowee, the plan includes updating the George Cobb-designed championship golf course, modernizing the country club, introducing a contemporary, fast-casual dining venue, expanding the Fitness and Racquet Center, and adding a second, 2 ½-mile paved walking trail.
“It’s been great working with the board, staff and our Keowee Key owners, who overwhelmingly approved this investment,” Board President Margaret Eldridge said at a groundbreaking for the project. “The golf course renovation, led by well-known architect Richard Mandell and contractor Wadsworth Golf, is well underway.
“Our collection of recreational amenities, vibrant social fabric, diverse arts culture, financial stability and value are unmatched in this region,” Eldridge added. “Our local partners, [including] Oconee County, South State Bank, Hogan Construction Company and architects DP3and LS3P, have been a very responsive team.”
Keowee Key is a 45-year-old residential development with nearly 3,500 residents. It was the first gated community located on Lake Keowee and is one of the largest employers in Oconee County. The community’s residents are well-known in the area for their extensive volunteer activities.
