The management firm will provide consulting services to the Sanford, N.C., property, which is located 20 miles from The Village of Pinehurst. Built on land previously used for tobacco farming, it features a Mike Strantz design that was once described on a list of the U.S.’s most unusual golf courses as “a visual overload [with] a series of raw sandy expanses and pits.”
The owners of Tobacco Road Golf Club, located just over 20 miles from The Village of Pinehurst in Sanford, N.C., announced that it has selected KemperSports to provide consulting services with the goal of further enhancing the public golf experience.
Tobacco Road was built on land that was previously used for tobacco farming, until sand mining and excavation shaped the landscape into dynamic land forms. The “Golden Age Architecture” layout was designed by golf course architect Mike Strantz, whose innovative course designs include Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island, S.C., as well as the renovation of the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. Because of the unique site and architectural quality, Tobacco Road is widely recognized as one of the top golf courses in the Pinehurst area.
Forbes magazine included Tobacco Road GC on a list of “10 unusual U.S. golf courses” that it published in 2013 (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2013/08/forbes-names-10-unusual-u-s-golf-courses/). The club’s entry on the Forbes list included this description:
“In the Sandhills just outside of famed Pinehurst, this former sand mine is the seminal work of late, great designer Mike Strantz. The site is a visual overload, and at almost every tee you will be confounded with various strategic options, all dictated by the unbelievable site, a series of raw sandy expanses and pits. A secondary theme throughout is of tobacco farming, and antique implements like rippers, plows and cultivators are used as tee markers.”
In partnering with KemperSports, Tobacco Road will benefit from the company’s proven sales and marketing experience as well as gain access to KemperClub – an initiative that is designed to drive brand awareness and engage customers with special promotions and events at KemperSports golf courses.
KemperSports will work with Tobacco Road to integrate its proven best practices and programming, including True Service, the management firm’s proprietary customer service training program, which focuses on ensuring consistent delivery of genuine, helpful and friendly service to members and guests.
“In today’s competitive golf market, we felt that KemperSports was the right partner to help propel Tobacco Road into the future,” said Tobacco Road co-owner Mark Stewart. “The company’s institutional knowledge, deep relationships, national buying power and best-in-class programs will help to ensure the long-term peak performance at our course.”
Added KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner: “Tobacco Road Golf Club is one of the most iconic golf course designs in the country, and we are privileged to help make this facility the best that it can be. We look forward to working with ownership to align goals and provide insight that will deliver positive results for the club.”
