Club officials and the PGA of America are expected to make the formal announcement on November 14 that the Newtown Square, Pa., property will host the events. Next September, the property will host the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA Tour FedExCup playoff events.
Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., has been awarded a major championship on each of the world’s predominant men’s and women’s tours—the 2027 PGA Championship and the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Club officials and the PGA of America planned to make the formal announcement on November 14. The awarding of two more prestigious tournaments—majors on the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour—is a big development for Aronimink, which next September will host the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA Tour FedExCup playoff events, the Inquirer reported.
C&RB recently reported that The Olympic Club in San Francisco will host the 2028 PGA Championship and the 2032 Ryder Cup, while Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., will host the 2024 PGA Championship, which will be held in May instead of the traditional August dates, in keeping with a new policy that the PGA will start beginning with the 2019 Championship.
The club has been in contact with the PGA and the U.S. Golf Association since the AT&T National, hosted by Tiger Woods, was held at Aronimink in 2010 and 2011. The idea of holding national events at the club became more feasible after Aronimink embarked on an extensive course restoration in October of last year. Officials said that about 85% of the project was completed before work stopped in early spring, and that the entire undertaking will be completed early in 2018, the Inquirer reported.
Aronimink last hosted a PGA Championship in 1962. The PGA of America named it as host of the 1993 PGA, but the club pulled out of the agreement in November 1990 when it determined it could not have minorities as part of its membership by the time of the event. Aronimink also was the venue for the 2003 Senior PGA Championship, a major on the Champions Tour that is conducted by the PGA of America, the Inquirer reported.
The PGA Championship will celebrate its 100th playing next year at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, the final time it will be held in August. The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the former LPGA Championship, debuted with its new name in 2015 at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y. Kemper Lakes Golf Club in suburban Chicago will host next year’s championship, the Inquirer reported.
