In 2010, Michael Treanor bought the Ellenville, N.Y., property, which had closed in 2009, out of bankruptcy and announced plans in 2015 to build a sports complex on the site. The plans for the 580-acre property include 460 hotel rooms, sports fields, zip lines, a ski park, rock climbing, a golf course, pools, skating and snow tubing.
The owner of the former Nevele Resort in Ellenville, N.Y., has secured $313 million in financing to create a regional sports complex and operate two hotels at the site, the Kingston, N.Y., Daily Freeman reported.
Town supervisor Leonard Distel said the development will have “something for everybody.”
A formal proposal has not been submitted to the Wawarsing Planning Board, but property owner Michael Treanor, when he first announced the plan almost three years ago, said it would include 460 hotel rooms, four professional baseball fields, four regulation Little League fields, and fields for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey, the Daily Freeman reported.
Treanor, who was not available for comment on October 24, said previously that the 580-acre property also would have zip lines, a ski park, rock climbing, trails, a golf course, indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor water park, skating and snow tubing, the Daily Freeman reported.
The financing for the project is coming from overseas investors, Distel said, and the two new hotels on the property are to be built by Marriott Corp, the Daily Freeman reported.
The Ulster County Legislature endorsed Treanor’s plan in the summer of 2016. At the time, the project was said to be valued at $170 million. There was no word about why the financing secured by Treanor totals $313 million, the Daily Freeman reported.
Treanor hopes to have the project completed in 2020, the Daily Freeman reported.
“We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Distel said. “This is a lot better than any casino that would ever be here. This is all going to be outdoors, plus this is probably to bring in a million visitors a year when it’s all developed.”
The Nevele, once a popular destination in the Catskills’ fabled Borscht Belt, closed in 2009 after years of struggling financially. It was bought out of bankruptcy by Treanor in 2010, but his application to operate a casino there was rejected by the state in late 2014, the Daily Freeman reported.
Treanor at one time said he would sell the property if he didn’t get a casino license, but he ultimately announced the sports complex plan in February 2015. Distel said Treanor’s plan for the site is “everything that was there 50 or 60 years ago, when the Nevele was there, except it’s going to be brought up to date. There’s going to be something there for everybody,” the Daily Freeman reported.
The supervisor said the plan apparently calls for taking down all the current buildings at the site except the skating rink structure and the iconic round tower that housed Nevele guest rooms, the Daily Freeman reported.
Distel did not identify the project’s investors but said he met them several weeks ago during a tour of the property. “They flew in by helicopter,” he said. “We gave them a tour and they showed us what the Nevele was going to look like after its completed.”
