The building plan for the facility in Thorpe on the Hill, Lincolnshire, England includes 19 lodges where dementia sufferers and their caretakers can visit. The lodges will also be available for weddings or events.
New golfing retreat lodges at Lincoln Golf Centre in Thorpe on the Hill, Lincolnshire, England are part of plan to help dementia sufferers enjoy the game, Lincolnshire Live reported.
Plans have been approved to change the use of land to form a holiday golf retreat, which includes permission to build 19 lodges. Managing Director Brian Logan wants it to be the first ever dementia-approved golf course, Live reported.
“People come down here with their carers and our members take them round the golf course,” Logan said. “That is how the idea happened. They wanted to stay longer and some wanted a weekend break.”
For Logan, the condition hits close to home. “My father-in-law was 94 and he died with dementia—it’s a very lonely disease.”
The lodges will not only be specifically for people with dementia—they can also be used for weddings or sports evenings, Live reported.
“We think it’s a good opportunity to do holiday breaks and holiday homes,” Logan said. “We might have less than 19 built. We did have a plan for 27 but we reduced it—it’s about the quality and funds available.”
The facility makes a point of being friendly, Logan said, and does not support elitism in the sport. “Six percent of people play golf and 20 percent would like to play golf. We would like to attract the 20 per cent who can feel comfortable and relax.”
The application was passed by North Kesteven District council planning committee, Live reported.
