In January, the club is planning to remove the trees, including soft maple, white oaks, sugar maple, tulip poplar and ash trees, from the property, when the ground is dry and hard. Once the project begins, it is expected to be complete in two to three weeks.
In part to improve air flow and its golf course, the Country Club of Terre Haute (Ind.) is planning the removal of 400 to 500 trees, the Terre Haute Tribune-Star reported.
It won’t likely happen until January, when ground is dry and hard, said General Manager Gary Behan.
“It is from our property [east] to the railroad tracks to the [Indiana 641 bypass] highway,” Behan said. “It will help with air flow on the golf course and help holes No. 10 and No. 12. The trees are on the side behind the clubhouse.”
The club obtained permission in March from the Vigo County Board of Commissioners to cross county-owned property for access for a temporary logging route. The club has also obtained right of ways from two other property owners needed for the logging, the Tribune-Star reported.
Additionally, the club has a state permit for a temporary bridge, to be used to cross Honey Creek, the Tribune-Star reported.
Keith Ruble, of Helms & Ruble Forestry, said he has marked the trees, many of which are soft maple, but other trees include white oak, sugar maple, Kentucky coffee tree and tulip poplar, as well as ash trees. Ash trees can be used for railroad ties and should be removed, Ruble said, as many are being killed by the emerald ash borer, an insect the preys on ash trees, the Tribune-Star reported.
“We are thinning out some of the mature trees. Some trees will be removed as they want to expand the driving range area,” said Ruble, who is a former superintendent of the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department. “We are making regeneration openings. If you want new trees, you have to have an opening to get light to the forest floor for trees to regenerate. Some areas we marked to take out just some trees.
“It is a science to do it right so you still have a nice woods. A lot of trees are mature and are to be harvested while in good shape. This will still be a nice woods,” Ruble said.
The tree removal, when started, is projected to be completed in two to three weeks, the Tribune-Star reported.
