Following days of heavy rain in May 2016, the golf course at The Woodlands, Texas property suffered heavy structural damage, prompting a bunker renovation that began in August. The project also focused on improved playability and accessibility, and an overall reduction in size to increase maintenance efficiency.
In May 2016, days of heavy rain resulted in more than half of the Tom Fazio course at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas to be underwater with heavy structural damage.
Superintendent Tim Huber met with the Board of Directors in June to assess the damage and explain that the time to invest in the course had arrived. Work on the bunker renovation began in August 2016.
The $1.2 million project included an overall bunker size reduction from 135,000 sq. ft. to 95,000 sq. ft. The project focused on three key areas: improved playability (with new liners and California White sand), improved accessibility (including slope reduction at entry points), and overall reduction of size, which will increase the efficiency of maintenance and provide long-term cost reduction for the club.
“The amount of work we are doing today is going to cut future expenses exponentially,” said Huber. “By reducing the overall square footage, we’ve increased the long-term sustainability of the course for our members.”
Members are already expressing their satisfaction with the project, which has provided a more aesthetically-pleasing look to the course while staying true to the original design.
The completed bunker renovation is the latest in a series of investments that includes renovation of the Nicklaus practice facility, premium range balls, luxury golf carts, and renovation of the Founder’s Lounge at the Nicklaus clubhouse. Carlton Woods is in its first year as a member-owned club.
