The family-owned course in Augusta, Mich., hopes to create a year-round attraction with the debut of its new Blue Stem restaurant, pairing fine dining and scenic views from the highest point in Kalamazoo County. Renee Hogge, formerly with Barton Hills CC, will be Blue Stem’s Executive Chef.
Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort in Augusta, Mich., is raising the bar with the addition of a restaurant overlooking its new links-style Stoatin Brae course (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2015/11/23/gull-lake-view-gc-resort-to-add-sixth-course/).
The new Blue Stem restaurant will be perched nearly 200 feet up on a ridge, the highest point in Kalamazoo County. It will offer panoramic views of the Kalamazoo River and nearby golf holes, as the family-owned and -operated resort seeks to enhance its reputation as one of the state’s top destination golf attractions.
While the new restaurant will be situated near the new Stoatin Brae course, the facility, designed of glass and cut stone, has been created to serve as an attraction throughout the year for the region.
Renee Hogge, who will serve as Executive Chef, said she is excited to join the family-owned club and is looking forward to creating a top attraction at Blue Stem.
“I spent many years in my own businesses—the Brighton Bar and Grill in Brighton [Mich.] and the Red Cedar Grill in Williamston [Mich.)—as well as eleven years at the Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor [Mich.],” Hogge said. “After having my own business and all those years taking care of private-club members, it’s a perfect way to meld not just the food and the customer service, but to make sure resort visitors have the perfect experience from the time they get out of their car until they get back [into it].”
Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort, located between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, is southwest Michigan’s oldest and largest golf resort, featuring five championship courses. It has been developed and operated for more than 50 years by three generations of the Scott family, including grandfather, Darl Scott; his son, Charles; and Charles’ son, Jonathan, the current President.
Club Vice President Bill Johnson said the family is pleased with the excitement surrounding the new course and restaurant.
“[Renee Hogge] has a terrific background in culinary arts and brings great experience and a love of cooking,” Johnson said. “She also has excellent management skills that will help with the training and consistency she brings to our existing staff. She is the perfect choice to launch the new restaurant.”
In addition to the new restaurant and Stoatin Brae course, the owners of Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort have spent more than $1 million in recent years renovating and refurbishing guest rooms, villas, and the resort’s original East Course Grill.
