The University of Michigan athletic department is asking its Board of Regents to increase its budget for a new clubhouse on the golf course by 20 percent, from $12 million to $15 million, the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News reported.
The regents approved the new clubhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich., with its $12 million budget, in July 2014 at the request of the athletic department. At the time, officials said the infrastructure of the existing clubhouse “is inefficient and the facility is costly to maintain,” and that the 65-year-old building is “outdated and no longer fits the university’s needs,” the News reported.
The new clubhouse will optimize operational functions, increase energy
efficiency, and include modern and spacious banquet facilities for the use of
the entire university community, officials said. The replacement facility will be approximately 24,000 sq. ft. located on the same site as the existing building, the News reported.
Site work will include grade changes, adjustments to golf course holes one and ten, repair of the concrete creek lining, new structure for the west side crossing of the creek, and relocated parking, the News reported.
Funding will be provided from athletic department resources and gifts. Additionally, the new clubhouse will be named after Richard and Ruth Postma. The two have made several financial gifts to the university, including funds to the law school where Richard Postma received his JD degree. Their recent gift of $4 million is intended to support various capital projects for U-M’s athletic department, the News reported.
Officials said they chose the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based architecture firm Partners & Sirny Architects to design the project and that it’s expected to provide an average of 26 on-site construction jobs. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2017, the News reported.
