With the popularity of at-home exercise programs like P90X and Insanity increasing, fitness centers are working harder than ever to get patrons through their doors.
At-home workouts like Insanity and P90X make it easy for consumers to fit in exercise without having to go to the gym, making fitness centers work that much harder to get members through its doors.
A video report by the Wall Street Journal online details one such effort by Crunch gyms, with a group fitness class called Transformer with Disqs. It features an apparatus called the disq, a resistance training tool, with tension cords that are adjusted by dials, for a workout that combines cardio and strength training with functional movements.
Part of the challenge for gyms is making these exercises accessible for a group, something consumers cannot get from at-home workouts, by encouraging interaction with other class participants.
Fitness centers are also aiming to draw more men to group fitness, as women are twice as likely to attend group classes as men, even though overall fitness center memberships are divided evenly among the sexes.
