According to a report by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Kohler Co. has been quiet about a possible addition to the four 18-hole courses it already owns in Wisconsin, neither confirming nor denying a report by the Golf Channel that Pete Dye has assessed a potential golf course property that Kohler has “been sitting on for years.”
Whether it’s because of market demand or in response to perceived competition, Herbert V. Kohler Jr. is contemplating building a fifth golf course in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
The Kohler Co. has been uncharacteristically hush-hush about a possible addition to the four 18-hole courses the company already owns—36 holes at Blackwolf Run in Kohler and 36 at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, the Journal Sentinel reported.
After several calls and emails, a Kohler Co. spokesman got back to the Journal Sentinel, but would not confirm or deny a report by the Golf Channel that architect Pete Dye has assessed property that Kohler has “been sitting on…for years.” In the email, the spokesman only wanted to confirm a reporter’s cell phone number in the event the company “has something to say.”
It’s assumed the property is on or near Lake Michigan, because Dye told the Golf Channel that four holes would be routed along the lake. Kohler has said on several occasions that he has looked all over the world for potential golf sites. He was interested in land on the Oregon coast, not far from the acclaimed Bandon Dunes golf resort, but said it would have taken years to develop the property because of environmental concerns and he eventually backed off, the Journal Sentinel reported.
Mike Keiser, who developed Bandon Dunes, is planning a similar high-end multi-course resort for 1,500 acres a few miles south of Wisconsin Rapids. Construction of the first course at Sand Valley, to be designed by the team of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, will begin this year, the Journal Sentinel reported.
In 2017, Erin Hills will play host to the first U.S. Open ever held in Wisconsin. The PGA Championship will be played at Whistling Straits for the third time in 2015 and the Ryder Cup is on the horizon in 2020, the Journal Sentinel reported.
