Competing chefs first prepared hors d’oeuvres for the group of attendees, which were enjoyed reception-style. Chefs then took to the stage where they had 20 minutes to prepare a dish from a mystery box of ingredients. Judges scored the hors d’oeuvres and mystery box preparation to determine the two finalists, who then returned for a second round of mystery box preparation. The winning chef was announced during dinner.
Turner was born and raised in Kaneohe, Hawaii, and found a love of food at an early age. The state’s diverse mix of culture and ethnicity comes through in his broad cooking style. Turner graduated from Le Cordon Bleu with the highest honors, and has worked in numerous kitchens from catering, to corporate and fine dining.
Turner’s preparation for the competition was a Glendale team effort. Alex practiced on mystery boxes assembled by Chef Mike Salgado and the entire culinary team for 2 weeks before the real competition, and his trainers were all present to cheer him on and celebrate his victory.
The chefs competition is produced by Evergreen Chapter members Maria Domann, CCM, and Judy Donnelly.
