With the Club Managers Association of America breaking away from its four-year affiliation with the Golf Industry Show to once again hold its own separate trade show and conference, the exhibition and continuing-education calendar for the first part of 2011 is especially full.
When the Golf Industry Show (GIS) concept made its debut in Anaheim, Calif. in 2007, it was believed that by combining shows that had previously been held separately by three of the industry’s major trade associations—the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) and the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA)—a more attractive, cost-effective and stronger venue would be created for both exhibitors and attendees.
But the original GIS alliance only lasted four years, with the CMAA announcing last year that it would leave the partnership after the 2010 show in San Diego, to once again hold its World Conference & Club Business Expo separately.
How this all works out, both for the groups that are still part of the GIS and the flying-solo-again CMAA, remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: A lot of managers who work for club and resort properties around the country will take trips to Orlando in the first two months of 2011, and in most cases it won’t be just so they can take their kids to Disney World.
On the heels of the PGA Merchandise Show that is always held in Orlando in late January (this year’s dates are January 27-29), the GIS will be held in that city from February 7-11, followed by the revival of CMAA’s conference, which will take place in Orlando from February 24-28.
(We must also unashamedly point out that no discussion of the first-quarter conference schedule for the club and resort industry would be complete without also including a mention of C&RB’s Chef to Chef Conference, which will give managers a chance to finally experience a different venue when it’s held in San Francisco from March 6-8; for details, visit www.CheftoChefConference.com).
Here are some highlights of the two shows that will be held in Orlando next month; a more detailed CMAA show preview will appear in the February issue of C&RB.
Still Very Much Alive at Five
In addition to the GCSAA and NGCOA, the remaining partners for what will now be the fifth Golf Industry Show will include the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the Golf Course Builders Association of America, the United States Golf Association, the National Golf Foundation, the International Golf Course Equipment Managers Association, and a new supporting partner, the Society of Golf Appraisers.
The 2011 GIS is expected to feature more than 600 exhibitors on the show floor. Other planned highlights include:
- Moving Projects Forward: Tools for Planning and Execution—Seminar sessions held in conjunction with the show will highlight best practices on moving renovation and construction projects forward at a golf course or facility. Featured topics will include: how to propose a project; legal issues; the permitting process; financing; and communicating the project, internally and externally.
- Outdoor Recreation Centers—Offering a variety of recreational opportunities throughout the summer and winter months is an important way that golf facilities can play an even greater role in their communities, and also generate additional revenue. These education sessions will help attendees learn best practices and new ideas that can help to increase traffic during the heat of summer and the chill of winter.
- Test-Drive Technology Center—Showcasing the newest technology solutions in the industry, this area on the GIS show floor promises to provide attendees with solutions for more effectively and successfully managing all aspects of their business, including the opportunity to “test drive” state-of-the-art hardware intended to make many tasks related to course management easier.
- The 2011 GIS will also once again feature popular attractions from previous shows, including the New Product Showcase, Buyer/Seller Marketplace, and Networking Parks.
Much to Discuss
During the CMAA’s four-and-a-half-day conference, attendees will be able to choose from a wide array of learning opportunities at more than 70 education sessions. Topics for the 2011 CMAA World Conference have been selected to meet the current needs and interests of club professionals, and are designed to include as much coverage as possible in these 10 key areas of competency for club managers:
- Club Governance
- Food and Beverage Management
- Accounting and Financial Management
- Human and Professional Resources
- Leadership
- Membership and Marketing
- Golf, Sports and Recreation Management
- External and Governmental Influences
- Facilities Management
- Interpersonal Skills
Most educational programs will be 90 minutes in length, with participants earning one-and-a-half Club Management Institute (CMI) Education Credits per session.
In addition to the education sessions, the CMAA Club Business Expo—previously known as the CMAA Annual Exposition—will spotlight products and services of interest to the entire club and hospitality industry, including:
- Architectural and Interior Design;
- Furniture;
- Software;
- Spa and Fitness, and much more.
While on the show floors at both GIS and the CMAA World Conference, be sure to stop by the booths of these suppliers:
