The bamboo theme of the Canebrake Country Club, Hattiesburg, Miss., is sprouting a new business venture designed to give the club an even greater resort feel, reports the Hattiesburg American.
Shoots Salon and Spa is a full-service hair salon and spa with a name that is a play on the bamboo cane theme. The salon offers seven stylists who cater to men and women, said co-owner Chris Ortego. The spa has two massage rooms with a staff of three masseuse and state-of-the-art tanning beds.
“It fits perfectly,” he told the American. “We have the golf course, a first-rate fitness center, swimming pool, restaurant and the lounge. Now we have the salon and spa.”
According to the American, the idea started with an existing salon business that Ortego, and his wife, Jennifer, already owned called Elements. That business, along with its staff of stylists, was moved to Canebrake CC with Dr. Bennett York becoming a part owner of the business. The name was changed and a full-service spa, with an experienced masseuse staff was added.
Opening the salon and spa was also a way for Canebrake to realize revenue from some excess space, reports the American.
“The club had about 4,000 square feet that was built out, but was not being used,” Ortego said. “So rather than let this 4,000 square feet just sit up there and not generate any revenue, we invested in building a spa.
