During a news conference earlier this month, The Greenbrier (White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.) resort and PGA officials announced that Tim McNeely would serve as director of the The Greenbrier Classic, the first large-scale event at the resort since the U.S. women beat Europe in the 1994 Solheim Cup.
McNeely has been involved with the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Tour event, the Pete Dye Classic at Bridgeport, since 2004. It was voted Tournament of the Year during its first year there. The tournament continued to grow over the years and in 2008 was renamed the Players Cup.
Also at the new conference, officials of The Greenbrier announced that modifications of the Old White Course are under way. Resort officials are working with Lester George of George Golf Design, the same firm that designed the course in 1914, on the project.
They are adding new tees on holes two, 11, 13, 15 and 17 to lengthen the course by more than 7,000 yards for the Tour players. The fairways for holes four, nine, 10 and 17 are being narrowed, and new bunkers are being added for holes 11 and 17. Also, on holes 16 and 17, the bluegrass rough along the green is being changed to bentgrass.
