A fire ripped through the 19th century Oaks Country Club in Goose Creek, S.C. on Wednesday razing a 1960s addition and damaging the roof and part of the second floor of the Georgian-style house.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, though arson was eliminated as a possibility, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office legal counsel Blair Jennings said.
Nobody was in the building at the end of The Oaks Avenue when a Goose Creek police officer spotted smoke at 12:10 a.m.
Officials estimated that 70 firefighters were on scene at some point before the blaze was brought under control at 5:30 a.m. Firefighters from the Naval Weapons Station, Caromi and Whitesville covered for rural Goose Creek.
Authorities said the fire started in the kitchen, located in an area that opened onto a swimming pool.
The property is listed for sale at $12 million by Prudential Carolina Real Estate.
The clubhouse is on 39 acres of The Oaks Plantation.
