The Country Club of Jackson entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office after seemingly ignoring orders to fire undocumented workers according to a report by WBLT News.
According to U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton’s office, In May 2006, the Social Security Administration sent the Country Club a letter stating that social security numbers for 43 workers didn’t match their records. The club sent letters explaining that to those employees. But on August 13, 33 illegals were still employed there.
On August 15, the ICE conducted a presentation for the Country Club to help them understand the documentation process. On August 30, ICE agents followed up and found 27 illegals were still employed. ICE was told that the employees were "necessary" for the operation of the Country Club.
Then on September 13 of 2006, ICE raided the club and arrested 18 undocumented workers of various nationalities. The business now must pay a fine of $214,500 and submit to more than a dozen sanctions; among them, they must conduct public workshops around the state to train other employers on legal hiring procedures.
