The Hannoush brothers and attorney Raipher D. Pellegrino have purchased the West Springfield, Mass., property. All of the new owners are longtime members who want to preserve the golf course and are in the process of improving the facilities, with interior renovations to the clubhouse underway.
The Hannoush brothers and former Springfield City Councilor Raipher D. Pellegrino bought the Springfield Country Club in West Springfield, Mass., from its members for $1.985 million, the Springfield, Mass.-based MassLive Media reported.
Members approved the sale back in January, as C&RB reported at the time.
The price became public this week when the deed was filed with the Hampden County Registry of Deeds. Pellegrino, an attorney practicing in Springfield, said on March 23 that all the new owners are longtime members who want to preserve the golf course and make improvements to the facilities. Interior renovations at the clubhouse are already underway, MassLive reported.
“We really believe in the club,” Pellegrino said. “It’s a gem.”
The Springfield Country Club was founded in 1892. Membership in recent years has been holding steady at about 450 members, including social-only members, the former president said in January. But the club had to discount membership in order to maintain that number and the members had difficulty finding a manager to run the banquet facility, MassLive reported.
The property totals 180 acres with views of the Connecticut River and Springfield in the distance. It has an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and the clubhouse building constructed in 1920. The adjacent condominiums are a separate entity, MassLive reported.
The sale leaves Longmeadow (Mass.) Country Club and Ludlow (Mass.) Country Club as the only member-owned clubs left in the region. In 2012, members of Crestview Country Club in Agawam sold to investors headed by course architect David M. Fleury. Last year, Fleury headed a group that bought Elmcrest Country Club in East Longmeadow for $1 million at a foreclosure auction. Both courses were eventually reopened, MassLive reported.
